Dr Noonan's Tuesday COVID-19 Response Update

Dear FCCPS Families,

Welcome back to school! I hope you all had a great spring break, albeit different, and you and your students feel ready for the challenge of new material. This week marks a turning point for us in FCCPS insofar as we will begin to introduce new content to our students PK-12. As mentioned previously, we would much prefer to be face-to-face, but here we are...I believe what our amazing teachers have planned for your students will be excellent, given the circumstances. The guidance I gave to our teachers as we begin the spring is that there is no expectation that what happens in the next several weeks will be perfect. We are engaged in an imperfect educational solution, and the speed of implementation has been nothing short of breakneck. Let's be reasonable, flexible, and let graciousness be our guide. Let’s not let perfection get in the way of progress. I am confident that our community can rally around this and help us all be successful.

To try and restore as much “normalcy” as we can, the Morning Announcements resumed today, and I hope you had a chance to see them. We will keep these up, like usual, for the remainder of the year.

Additionally, in an effort to resume normal operations, please be on the lookout for the Teacher of the Year, Professional Specialist of the Year, and Support Employee of the Year announcements this week. We are excited to announce them via video starting Wednesday (likely). I know you will all be proud of the selections and will join me in celebrating our designees this year.

I was recently sent an article that outlines “lessons learned” from Hong Kong International School who went through what we are going through several months ago https://www.learningpersonalized.com/we-did-not-sign-up-for-this-9-lessons-learned-from-a-hong-kong-principal-on-facing-a-crisis/ . The article reminds us that there is the “Triage” phase, a “Transition” phase, and a “Post-Epidemic” phase. I would submit we are moving out of the Triage phase and are entering into the Transition phase. The good news is that due to the great planning of our school team we anticipated the triage phase, which helped us mobilize quickly and are now on our way to the post-pandemic phase - albeit aways away…it is something we can collectively look forward to.

Communications from me will shift slightly now that Morning Announcements have resumed. I will continue to communicate but only once a week on Fridays. I will continue to use Twitter also to send messages out (including my Wednesday videos from somewhere in FCCPS), so please follow me @peternoonan. Our FCCPS COVID-19 Page is full of resources to support students and their families as well, so please visit. Also, our schools will continue to do their weekly updates.

This past week I was on one of our long family walks we have become accustomed to during this time. We got deep into our conversation and realized what many of you are probably realizing as well…we are grieving. We are grieving the loss of school, the loss of our friendships in the form we know them, the personal interactions with others in life, the ebb and flow of how the world works, etc… I share this because it is important to reflect on and acknowledge this grief so that we can move through it. With the shift into new instruction, we head into more uncharted territory, and this, coupled with the losses we are already experiencing, can be daunting and stressful. However, our family remains heartened by the reminder that this is not a forever moment…in fact, we are hoping to be on the other side of this within a matter of months. So, stay strong!

Lastly, I will share the Noonan/Letiecq/Dineen motto at our house as we move through our daily lives with school and work in an increasingly intertwined way (we had 5 Zoom calls going at the same time yesterday!).  Do the best you can, let reasonability be your guide, and give each other gracious space. It is working for us, and I hope it works for you too.

All my best and we miss you!

Peter

Peter
