Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School has been selected for recognition through the Virginia Naturally School Recognition Program, which celebrates schools that provide meaningful environmental education and opportunities for students to connect learning with their local environment.

One example submitted as evidence was MEHMS’s sixth-grade Watersheds Unit, led by science teachers Myria Shipman and Crystal Liller. Students explored watershed health through hands-on activities including watershed models, a campus watershed walk, and water-quality testing. The unit culminated in student action when sixth graders organized an Earth Day campus cleanup after identifying pollution that could enter local waterways.

This recognition highlights the great work happening at MEHMS to connect science learning, environmental stewardship, and student action.
